WUGA Artist in Residence Event for October

The last Artists in Residence event this year will require about a half-hour trek east of Athens but will be well worth your time!

The featured artist is Jean Westmacott, the sculptor who created the lovely Athena statue in front of the Classic Center. She has sculpted other public pieces, too — for example, at Brenau University where she taught and was galleries director for 16 years. Jean and her husband Richard live in a historic home (built around 1820) in rural Oglethorpe County. He is retired from the School of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia. Jean has retired from Brenau but occasionally teaches very popular sculpture classes at OCAF, which had a wonderful exhibit of her work a couple years back.

The event at the couple’s home is on Saturday, October 21st, from 3 to 5. Friends of WUGA pay $10 to attend, and others pay $15. Attendees must RSVP with Abbie Thaxton or (706) 542-9842 to reserve a space and receive directions to the Westmacott’s gorgeous home.

We are so pleased that Marti’s at Midday provides a bounty of hors d’oeuvres as we celebrate each artist, and Uncommon Gourmet supplies the fine wine. Hope you can join us in celebrating this fine artist honored even as far back as 1997 as one of “Georgia’s 100 Women in the Visual Arts.”
