'Hackathon' and Museum of Natural History Celebration Gala Friday in Athens

The Friends of the Museum of Natural History are holding the facility’s 2017 Annual celebration Friday. The museum has more than 5 million items in its collections.

Lanie Barlow is Vice President of the Friends of the Museum.

“We have a silent auction, we have a speaker, and this year our speaker is Justin Schmidt who is an author of the ‘Sting of the Wild,’ and he’s an entomologist that used to work at the University of Georgia,” according to Barlow. “He’s won the Ig Nobel Prize  in physiology and entomology.”

The event is Friday from 6 to 10 pm at the Botanical Garden.

The Hatch makerspace is holding its grand opening Saturday, but before that the facility is hosting its monthly ‘Hackathon’ Friday. Founder and Executive Director Erica Parson says that allows members of the public to tour the facility and see how it works.

“They can come and see the types of things that people do in the space and see the tools actually being used.” Parson said. “You don’t have to bring a project; we have stuff that you can do there. I also encourage people to come out to one of those. This one is actually the day before our grand opening, it’s October 6th  from 5 to 9 pm and it’s just a great way to meet other makers and see what we’re trying to do there.

Both the ‘Hackathon’ and Saturday’s Open House are free.
