ACC Library Celebrating Scottish History and Culture During "Outlandish in Athens!"

Athens Regional Library

The Athens-Clarke County Library is celebrating the popular STARZ drama Outlander for fans of Scottish history and culture.  Outlandish in Athens!  is a full weekend of Outlander and Scottish Highlands activities scheduled for December Saturday, December 2 and Sunday, December 3.  The special event will feature Scottish music, dance, literature and more.

Activities kick off 9:40 Saturday morning with a bagpipe performance by the Athens Piper, David Gregory. Those attending can spend the day performance by The Athens Piper, David Gregory. Spend the day learning about all things Scottish – Scottish genealogy, the Jacobite Rebellion, and even how you can use Mango Languages (available through the Library’s website) to learn Gaelic. There will also be demonstrations of Scottish culture, such as country dancing by the Thistle and Kudzu Society and tartan weaving by Dottie Harnish. There will even be presentations on time travel and herbal remedies and lots of other exciting activities.

Finally, enjoy musical performances scattered throughout the day. Athens favorites The Green Flag Band will perform Scottish-inspired Celtic tunes, including jigs, reels and aires, featuring traditional Scottish folk tunes at 11:15 a.m. Later at 2:30 p.m., the Sassenachs Women’s Vocal Ensemble will perform Scottish songs in traditional choral arrangements alongside newer renditions with a contemporary flavor. Bob Hay will close out the day with a musical performance at 4:00 p.m.

On Sunday, Dec. 3, come back to the library for a special Live! @ the Library concert featuring harpist Tracie Brown and the music of Outlander at 3:00 p.m. Brown’s performance will be followed by a Highland Holiday Tea cooking demonstration at 4:00 p.m. with Chef Theresa Rice, who will share facts and history about taking tea, tips on hosting your own tea party, and recipes from the cookbook The Outlander Kitchen by Theresa Carle-Sanders.

Outlandish in Athens is free and open to the public. To learn more about this event, call the library at (706) 613-3650 or visit www.athenslibrary.org/outlander.
