Crews Restoring Power after Outages Caused by Winter Storm

Jackson EMC

Power outages have been reported in the wake of the blast of winter weather moving through the state. Georgia Power reports more than 22,000 customers were without power as of late Friday afternoon. An additional 19,000 customers of Georgia’s electric membership cooperatives also lost power.

Jackson EMC is experiencing minimal outages as a result of the winter weather conditions. With fewer than 10 outages reported in Barrow, Jackson and Gwinnett counties. At the height of the storm Friday, about 500 members reported outages. Linemen are working to restore power. April Sorrow is the Director of Public Relations and Communication for the cooperative.

“It does look like now, the bad weather, the winter weather that we have in store for us has reached us here in Athens and Gainesville and Jackson County,” Sorrow said. “What we are asking our members to do is just to stay safe when they are on the road. At this point we don’t see a lot of weather conditions that look they are threatening to us that they will cause outages. We e don’t see a lot of wind associated with this, but there is always a potential for outage and we do tell people to please beware of any fallen power lines, treat any fallen power line as if it is electrified and steer clear.”
