The University of Georgia hosted the 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Breakfast this morning. Dr. Cheryl Davenport Dozier, president of Savannah State University was the keynote speaker. The former associate provost said it was and honor to be to be asked to address the crowd.

“I had the opportunity to coordinate this event as Dr. Cook does now, so we always for looking for that opportunity and that speaker that would fire us up so I knew I had a task,” Davenport Dozier said. “So just to be asked was an awesome honor and then to get the response I received after has been overwhelming.”

The Freedom Breakfast honors the legacy of the slain civil rights leader by recognizing community members who have made significant contributions regarding race relations, justice and human rights with the President’s Fulfilling the Dream Award.

Davenport Dozier says Dr. King would be surprised to see communities still struggling with issues he fought 50 years ago.

“I think he would be shocked at the injustices that still exist that were so similar that he was marching against 50 years ago.  I think he would be stunned with the violence that’s going on in America. I think that he would just be shocked that we are talking about who belongs and who doesn’t.”

The event is jointly sponsored by UGA, the ACC Unified Government, and the Clarke County School System.
