Employment Up in Northeast Georgia During 2017

Employment and workforce numbers were up in Northeast Georgia for last year. The State Labor Department released the numbers Thursday.  Commissioner Mark Butler says 2017 was a banner year for the 12-county area.

“We saw just under 10,000 individuals that had previously had not been working gain employment during the year,” Butler said. “That’s a very good increase in employment.”

Butler says the region’s unemployment rate dropped a full point from 5 to 4 percent over the 12-month cycle. He expects the news to remain positive in 2018 as well.

“I think that the entire state of Georgia is going to continue to do well. We’re not seeing any indicators out there that are giving us any kind of worry about a slowdown, now we may not grow in some of the large numbers that we have in the last couple years.”

Butler urges both people looking for jobs and those looking to hire, to use the department’s job listing service.

“Make sure that you take the time to go to EmployGeorgia.com, sign up for services there, let it build up your resume, put your information online and also start your job search there. It’s not just jobs posted with the Georgia Department of Labor, it also spiders out, it pulls jobs from other reputable job boards to that one location.”

He says more there are currently more than 2200 active job listings for the area.

The Northeast Georgia region includes Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Jasper, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Walton counties.
