ACC Police Department Offering Active Shooter Response Classes on Thursday

The ACC Police Department is offering free classes on learning how to survive a shooting event. The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Classes are being held this Thursday, February 8th ; the first is from 9 a.m. until 11 am  and the second class is from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Athens Regional Library. Geof Gilland is Public Information Assistant with the department. He says it’s another tool people can use.

"The program uses active shooter scenarios from the past. So by utilizing those other previous active shooter scenarios, the officer kind of guides the discussion so people can see what happened in the past," said Gilland.

Topics will include the history and prevalence of active shooter incidents, civilian response options, and medical issues.
Gilland says the course will provide strategies, guidelines and plans for surviving a violent event.

"The curriculum that we use is based on a program developed by Texas State University," said Gilland "And so the officers that we have involved in this class have to be trained by them, in order to teach the class. So it's not just a couple of officers who how up and talk about things they've noticed in the past. The Texas State University curriculum is very good and always updated with the latest information."
While the classes are free and open to the public, due to the mature subject matter, discretion is advised.
