One of the state’s largest teachers’ groups is has made its endorsement in Georgia’s gubernatorial race.
The Georgia Association of Educators’ Board of Directors voted unanimously to endorse former Georgia House Democratic leader Stacey Abrams for governor. In a statement, the GAE cited Abrams’ opposition to 2016’s Amendment One as a key factor.
An affiliate of the National Education Association, GAE represents teachers as well as administrators, school support personnel, and other school employees.
Abrams faces former state representative Stacey Evans in the May 22 democratic primary.
In Athens, educator Tawana Smith Maddox qualified today to run for the Board of Education District 9 seat.
Small businessman Carl Blount qualified Wednesday afternoon to run for the District 7 seat on the ACC Commission. That seat is currently held by Diane Bell. Attorneys Russell Edwards and Bill Overend have also qualified to run for that position.
Danielle Benson qualified Tuesday to run for the District 5 seat currently held by Jared Baily who is seeking reelection. Bailey and candidate Tim Denson both qualified to run on Monday.
