The 2018 Donald L. Hollowell Lecture at UGA

UGA School of Social Work

The University of Georgia is hosting the 2018 Donald L. Hollowell Lecture on Tuesday, March 20 at the Chapel.

Dr.  Llewellyn Cornelius, is the Donald Hollowell Professor for Civil Rights and Social Justice Studies He tells us more about this year’s guest speaker.

“We are bringing in Maria Varela, who is the first Latina who was involved in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the early 1960s,” Cornelius said. “She’s actually a photographer, in terms of her work and she does photo-documentaries.”

He says her visit is particularly timely this year.

“She’s actually coming to campus really to serve as a bridge between the past in terms of the Civil Rights Movement and encouraging folk to think about what are the next steps, where should we be in the 21st century,”?

Varela’s speech is entitled “Time to Get Ready.”

Cornelius says Georgia and the rest of the nation will face challenges due to changes in population.

“Part of our challenge in this new century is to embrace the multi-cultural America that we have. We know there is expected to be a good 5 million moving to the Atlanta metro area in the next 10 years, so we have a very complex scenario here in Georgia and also us being a world-class state.”

The Donald L. Hollowell Lecture is named for the civil rights attorney who was the lead counsel in Holmes v. Danner, the landmark 1961 cast that allowed African-Americans to attend the University of Georgia.

The event is free and open to the public. It starts at 3 pm.
