A prominent Georgia lawmaker is resigning as chairman of the Senate Education Committee over concerns about increased spending on charter schools.
The Marietta Daily Journal reports Republican Sen. Lindsey Tippins' resignation came after legislators voted to increase spending on charter schools by nearly $18 million per year. The bill now heads to the governor's desk.
Tippins says he couldn't support the measure because many traditional public schools receive less funding per pupil than the average charter school.
Tippins was the only Republican Senator to oppose the measure. He says he resigned because his views didn't reflect that of the Republican caucus.
