Classic Center to Host 6th Annual Chess & Community Conference

Chess and Community

Chess and Community is holding its 6th Annual Conference Saturday. This year’s theme is “Choose Your Path, Make Your Move.” Speakers include former inmate and current police Chaplin, Shane Sims, and Athens native and senior software engineer at Reddit, Kevin Dious. Executive Director Lemuel Life LaRoche says the event focuses on the positive in Athens.

“Too often we like to highlight what’s not working, what’s not working in Athens,” according to LaRoche.” "I think with this conference we’ll be able to see and get a clear picture on the things that are working and how we can as a community better engage and inspire and motivate our youth to move forward.”

Four student essay winners will also take part in the event. In addition, students will face off against local law enforcement members in a chess tournament.
