Brain Aid Fest in Athens

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the Athens nonprofit organization Brain Aid is hoping to end the stigma often associated with mental illness.

Stephen Cramer is Executive Director and Founder. He says talking about mental health issues helps to get rid of the stigma surrounding the issue.

He hopes to increase awareness as well as to raise money for local agencies at the two-day Brain Aid Fest Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5.

“ I know that the mental health conversation is better worldwide and stigma is maybe slightly less, people have more open about saying they have depression or anything,” according to Cramer. “I want to talk about the importance of mental health as well, to raise money for local mental health groups.”

The Brain Aid Fest at Flicker bar will include music as well as three minutes each for Athens candidates for mayor and commission to speak about their ideas on the topic. The fest continues Saturday evening in addition to a Brain Aid March to Save Our Brains. Visit Brainaidfest.com or its Facebook page for more information.
