Athens Man Killed after High-Speed Pursuit in Barrow and Oconee Counties

An Athens man was killed after a high-speed pursuit Saturday. 27-year old Levi Cortez Weems died at the scene. The chase began when a Barrow County deputy tried to stop his vehicle for a traffic violation. The pursuit ended in Oconee County on Highway 316 near McNutt Creek Drive. Corporal Oneal Saddler is with the Athens branch of the Georgia State Patrol.

“One of my troopers got involved in the chase as we approached Oconee County, actually chasing a Dodge Durango, gold in color,” according to Saddler. “The topper got in primary of the vehicle and attempted to perform the pit maneuver, to end the chase, the chase at that point reach speeds of 90 miles per hour. The vehicle veered of the right should of the road on Georgia 316.”

The maneuver caused Weems SUV to overturn and roll several times.  Weems was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene. A second man, whom authorities believe was the driver, managed to flee from the scene.  

The GBI is assisting the in the search for him. A helicopter and K-9 units were used in that search. The GBI is assisting the in the ongoing effort to find that suspect.

Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have information about the whereabouts or identity of the driver to contact law enforcement officials.
