UGA Plane for Sale

Georgia fans will have a chance to expand their sports memorabilia collection with the sale of the UGA Athletic Association’s plane.

After buying the plane for $1.6 million in 2006, the Athletic Association is planning on selling the airplane and using a charter service for travel instead.

According to athletic director Greg McGarity, the plane was used for various trips ranging from recruiting visits and donor events to official university business and meetings.

“There’s nothing wrong with [the plane] at all, but it was reaching a point and time where it was the best business decision to make a change while the engine still had five or six years of life left on it,” McGarity said.

Georgia’s plane operated under a budget of $745,600, including the costs of maintenance, service contracts and fuel.

As for the charter flights, there will be an undisclosed increase in expenditures, but the costs of pilots, insurance and liability, will not be a part of the total expenses, according to McGarity.

The Athletic Association expects the sale of the plane during the next fiscal year.
