Georgia's Parole Board has Selected New Leaders

Georgia's parole board has selected new leaders. A news release Tuesday from the State Board of Pardons and Paroles says board members have elected Terry E. Barnard as chairman, effective July 1. He succeeds James Mills.

Barnard previously served three one-year terms as board chairman, from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2017. He's served on the board since May 2010 and was appointed in December to a second seven-year term.
Board members also elected Brian Owens to serve as vice chairman. He's served on the board since February 2015 and was previously commissioner of the Department of Corrections. He will succeed Braxton Cotton as vice chairman.
The board decides on the release of Georgia prison inmates and is the only authority with the power to commute a death sentence.
