Officials Say 2 Georgia Inmates Died in Apparent Suicides

Georgia Department of Corrections

Prison officials say two Georgia inmates appear to have died in apparent suicides at different prisons on the same day.

The Georgia Department of Corrections said in news releases that the inmates were found unresponsive in their cells Saturday and efforts to revive them were unsuccessful.

The agency said Felipe Diaz was found in his cell at Hancock State Prison in Sparta around 2:50 p.m. He was serving a 15-year sentence for an armed robbery conviction in Gwinnett County.

The agency said Herman Galeno was found in his cell at Valdosta State Prison in Valdosta around 8:15 p.m. He was serving a 20-year sentence for an armed robbery conviction in Cobb County.

Corrections officials say both deaths are under investigation, which is standard procedure when inmates die in custody.
