Girls Rock Athens and United Group of Artists Music Association will host Girls Rock Hip-Hop Showcase and Industry Mixer on Sunday at The World Famous. The event is meant is to highlight young women in hip-hop and soul music featuring some of Athens rising female artists.

Mokah-Jasmine Johnson, the hip-hop director for Girls Rock Athens said the program is an opportunity to strengthen girls with diverse backgrounds within the entertainment industry.

“I think it’s a very important program because it helps to empower young women in music and it’s something positive to do,” Johnson said, “And to help diversify the program and bring in more kids, that’s a part of the reason why I joined the team.”

The event will include live performances, a panel discussion, and an opportunity for attendees to network. Topics of discussion will include marketing and managing your music career, history of women in hip-hop, and sexism in the music industry.

The showcase is from 6:30 to 9:30 and is open to the public. All proceeds are are donated to Girls Rock Camp.

“We’re asking for like $5 donation. That’s going to go towards the Girls Rock camp, which starts that Monday, and it’s basically to cover scholarships and any expenses so that young girls from a diverse background can attend the program, and it’s not just based on having enough money.”
