Runway Rehabilitation Underway at Athens-Ben Epps Airport

athensclarkecounty.com

The main runway at Athens-Ben Epps Airport is undergoing a major rehabilitation project. According to the ACC Public Information Office, updates are needed on runway 9/27 for safety reasons. The runway is nearly 40 years old and the FAA says it is in poor condition.

The construction will include removing older asphalt and replacing it with a stronger and newer runway surface. Drainage systems will be installed to help eliminate standing water and extend the life of the new runway. It will also be marked, painted and grooved.

In addition, the project will include new upgraded lights and signs.

Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed by September 15. Construction will stop for the busy fall season through November 5, 2018, then the remaining work will get underway. The entire project is scheduled for completion by January 15, 2019.

The total cost of the work is approximately $11.4 million. The majority of the funds, some $10 million, come from the FAA. The Georgia DOT will fund about $682,000. The remainder, approximately $587,000 will come from TSPLOST 2018 funds.
