Georgia Power says the cost to complete construction at the twin Vogtle nuclear units will rise by $1.1 billion.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the additional costs to complete the construction at the nuclear units in Burke County will not be handed down to customers.

The company said in a Wednesday statement that Southern Nuclear, which has been managing the project for more than a year, revised the estimated cost to complete the project from $7.3 billion to $8.4 billion.

The company says project leadership made several decisions in an effort to lower project risk and maintain project momentum.

Cost to complete the nuclear units has nearly doubled since project certification in 2009, with construction delays, hiring issues and a stand down at the plant that raised concerns about the project's viability.
