Athens First A.M.E. Church Holds 22nd Annual Free Community Health Fair

Robert Harrison

The Athens community is invited to a free health fair tomorrow morning at First AME Church on Hull Street. Providers include the ACC Health Department, Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital, Athens Neighborhood Health Center, Athens Nurses Clinic and UGA among others.

Robert Harrison is one of the organizers. He says the agencies will provide a variety of services.

“We’ve been able to do mammography, prostate exams, screenings for hypertension, diabetes, vision and dental exams.”

He says everyone is invited.

The entire population of Athens, it’s not need-based in terms of income, it’s wide open,” according to Harrison.

“We’ve been able to build relationships with substance abuse centers, those people can come in, homeless situation, whatever the case may be.”

Harrison says this is the 22nd year the church has conducted the community health fair, with hundreds attending each year.

“We did not reinvent the wheel, we just created a platform where those who have a need and those who meet the need have a site to do that.”

The Clarke County school system is providing free bus rides to and from the event. Which runs from 10 am until 2 pm. For more information, bus schedules, services provided you can call, 706-255-4390 or 706-201-6859.
