Books for Keeps 8th Annual Gigantic Book Sale

Athens Nonprofit Books for Keeps is holding its 8th Annual Gigantic Book Sale, which takes place this weekend and next. The community event is the biggest fundraiser for the organization. All the donated books that aren’t suitable for the organization’s school-based programs are included in the book sale. Executive Director Leslie hale says every genre imaginable is represented.

“We have everything from board books for the babies in your life and the little toddlers, to chapter books for your elementary schooler, to adult fiction and non-fiction” according to Hale. “We have great contemporary fiction, classics if you need to come find a copy of Pride and Prejudice to add to your shelf, and wonder coffee table books, cook books, there is something for everyone at this sale.”.

Some 30,000 books are up for sale at drastically reduced prices.

Hale says the sale raises the bulk of the organization’s funds.

CUT “This book sale serves a couple of functions, first it is a really important fundraiser for us,” Hale said. “We typically raise about $20,000 with this sale and that is really important for feeding back into our program and helping us buy books for the students that we serve in local elementary schools.”

It also helps spread the word about its mission.

“It’s also a really great awareness raiser for us, it helps us interact with members of the community who might not otherwise know what Books for Keeps is and what we’re doing in the local schools.”
