Baldwin Hall Map Project

Finalized plans for a Baldwin Hall Memorial were released Tuesday. It will honor the remains of slaves found during construction at the site in 2015. Earlier this year, a Baldwin Hall study commissioned by UGA’s Office of Research completed a comprehensive mapping project.

Professor Marguerite Madden is the director of the Center for Geospatial Research. She headed the project which includes old maps and photos of Baldwin Hall and Athens.

“The product that we have is a visualization that people can interact with the maps, and view them, pan them, zoom into them and just explore the history of Athens,” according to Madden.

Associate director Sergio Bernardes co-headed the venture.

“It’s a treasure, you have all sort of information, very, very interesting to visit these maps.”

The interactive maps are from the 1800s to the present.

“Well these maps, they have been prepared so they have real world coordinates and you can visit those areas if you know the coordinates of one particular spot and you can to this particular spot and check what the map was showing at this particular time,” Bernades said.

Madden says she hopes the project opens up a community discussion.

“We just hope it starts or continues a conversation, so more and more people learn about Athens’ history and talk to one another.”
