Clarke County School Bus Evacuated due to Sinkhole

A sinkhole led to the evacuation of a Clarke County School bus Tuesday morning. Parents received a letter informing them of the incident today.

According to a statement from the district, a bus carrying 24 Cedar Shoals High School students was evacuated due to a sinkhole that opened up near the intersection of Carver Drive and Zetella Lane in Athens, the sinkhole opened up as the bus approached a stop, cause the bus to tilt to the side. The sinkhole was caused by an underground water main break.

Students remained on the bus until Athens-Clarke County Police Officers arrived, then the students, driver, and monitor were safely evacuated. There were no injuries reported.

The students were taken to Cedar Shoals to begin the school day.
