New Bridge Open For Use In Southeast Clarke Park

The completed foot bridge in Southeast Clarke Park

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announced the opening of a 35-foot fiberglass walking bridge in Southeast Clarke Park.

The bridge is intended to connect trails from the Whit Davis Road and Lexington Road sides of the park.

“This bridge allows a safe creek crossing for users of the trails and allows citizens to park at any of the three parking lots, including the Athens-Clarke County Tennis Center, with access to all the amenities of this 124-acre park,” according to a press release by the Leisure Services Department.

Funding for the bridge came from a grant by the Riverview Foundation.

Access to the bridge was made possible by the work of two Boy Scouts from the Athens area as part of their Eagle Scout projects. Troop 7’s Thomas Dickerson and Troop 149’s Miles Montello executed independent projects to plan and clear trails connecting to the bridge.

The bridge is open to citizens and accessible by any of the three parking areas at Southeast Clarke Park: Athens-Clarke County Tennis Center, recreation fields and Skate Park, or the Whit Davis dog parks and World of Wonder Park.
