*Update* Buildings on Lumpkin Street in Athens Evacuated After Reports of a Gas Leak

*Update* Battalion Chief Greg Amason says crews have contained gas leak on Lumpkin Street. Utility personnel are still working on scene, but there is no further need to avoid the area.

Athens-Clarke County Fire Department Battalion Chief Greg Amason stated that ACCFD was dispatched at 12:09 p.m. Tuesday after there were reports of a gas leak near Lumpkin Street and Brittain Avenue in Athens.  

Buildings on the west side of Lumpkin Street were evacuated including the Presbyterian Center and the Catholic Student Center.

The gas leak is estimated to be repaired between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. This portion of Lumpkin Street will be closed until then.

There is no word on what caused the gas leak at this time.
