Leslie Marva Adams disappeared in 2005 and her remains were found two years later in a swampy area in northeast Georgia. This week, police arrested her ex-boyfriend in the death.
Officers on Thursday arrested Billy Joe Cook, 51, on a murder charge, Gwinnett County police said Friday in a news release. Cook was being held without bond in the Gwinnett County jail and it wasn't clear whether he had an attorney who could comment on his arrest.
Adams, 40, was reported missing in October 2005. Evidence found in her Lilburn apartment led police to believe she may have been killed. She had obtained a temporary protective order against Cook two days before she went missing.
The case was investigated as a homicide from the start and Cook was the primary and only suspect, police said.
Adams' remains were found two years later, in 2007, in a swampy area off Interstate 85 in Franklin County. An autopsy done by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that her manner of death was homicide.
The Gwinnett County police cold case unit reopened the case last year. Working with the county district attorney's office, investigators did more interviews and re-examined evidence.
A cold case detective was able to establish probable cause to arrest Cook and a warrant charging him with murder was taken out on Sept. 28. But police didn't know where he was.
Gwinnett County cold case detectives found him Thursday on Interstate 75 in Henry County. With the help of the Georgia State Patrol and Henry County police, Cook was taken into custody.
