Democratic Challenger Dawn Johnson on Race for the District 47 Seat

Once race that Clarke County voters will have a stake in is the race for the district 47 state senate seat. Democrat Dawn Johnson is challenging incumbent Senator Frank Ginn.

“After November 2016 I think a lot of people realized we needed to be more engaged with our government,’ Johnson said. “I started looking at things that were going through the Georgia Legislature, and I got really angry because they were things that weren’t really helping people. They had English as the official language, the religious freedom bill.”

Johnson says she knows first-hand the struggles and challenges facing many people in the district.

“Because I know what it’s like to struggle in this economy,’ in 2013 we declared medical bankruptcy, we had $23,000 in medical bill in one year, with health insurance. There’s two Georgias, there’s the Georgia for a rich person and the Georgia for everybody else.”

She says things are even more difficult others who may be even more susceptible to unexpected financial difficulties.

“We went from having a year’s salary in savings, having a home that we had put 40 percent down on, having 800 credit ratings, to being financially unstable in a matter of a couple of years and if we were that vulnerable then people who earn minimum wage or even $12 an hour how do we expect them to ever be financially stable in this economy if we don’t change how the system’s rigged against the average person.

Polls are open until 7 o’ clock Tuesday evening.
