Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators

The 31st Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators wrapped up at the Georgia Center Tuesday. 236 state lawmakers took part in the event offered by the Carl Vinson Institute. This is the fourth trip for Brett Herrell. The Snellville representative says the event provides information on a variety of topics.

“We had a great three-day event here at the Carl Vinson Institute here on the University of Georgia campus, a great opportunity to meet fellow legislators, to learn about key issues in the state, to get a lot background information from the various state departments and how they operate,” according to Herald. “It was just a very enjoyable event.”

District 64 representative Derrick Jackson was elected in 2016 and is the deputy whip for the Democratic party. He says the preview gives lawmakers a chance to do advance work on issues they will have to contend with during the session.

“January, February and March, we’re moving at hyper speed, so by getting that precursor on the topics we’re going to discuss and the things that we’re going to deal with, as you heard today, things like health, that’s on the top of our list,” Jackson said. “We’re talking about Medicaid expansion, we talked about public and school safety, dealing with mental illness, the opioid crisis.”

The Biennial Institute has been a part of the state’s political calendar since 1958.
