Office of Institutional Diversity to Screen Documentary about Life of Mary Frances Early

UGA Media Relations

The Office of Institutional Diversity will screen the documentary “Mary Frances Early: The Quiet Trailblazer,” on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in Tate Theatre to mark the beginning of Black History Month. The event is free and open to students and the public.

Reservations are required to attend the screening, and there will be a reception prior to the screening at 5 p.m.

Early was the first black student to graduate from the University of Georgia, earning a master’s degree in music education in 1962 and returning to earn a specialist in education degree in 1967.

She later served as music director for the Atlanta Public Schools system and was the first black president of the Georgia Music Educators Association in 1981. She also taught at Morehouse College and at Spelman College, and served as chair of the music department at Clark Atlanta University.

Georgia Public Broadcasting first debuted the film last year.

Other sponsors of the event include the College of Education, the Graduate School, Graduate and Professional Scholars, the Office of the Dean of Students, the Tate Student Center, and the Institute of Higher Education.
