Nominations Open for Third Annual Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award

The Third Annual Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award Contest is underway and organizers are currently seeking nominations.

Community members are encouraged to nominate area songwriters for the highly-regarded award, named in honor of the late renowned Athens singer-songwriter.

Committee chair Cortez Garza says nominations from all genres are wanted.

“It’s open to anybody. I ask that people nominate music meeting certain criteria. The song had to come out in 2018,” Garza said. “We ask that people who make nominations keep in mind that this is very much an Athens event and award. We want nominees to be from this area.”

Self-nominations are also welcome.

In an effort to raise awareness about the award and nomination process, organizers are holding a kickoff event.

“The most important message I can convey is that the nomination process has begun,” Garza said.

Nominations are being accepted until March 15.

The free event takes place at Hendershots on Friday, Feb. 8. Doors open at 7 pm.

The winner receives a $1,000 prize; runners-up receive free studio time.

The third annual award will be presented at the Foundry on May 16th. The contest is presented by the Classic City Rotary Club. WUGA is one the event sponsors.
