Heavy Rains Swamping Deep South/Athens Flash Flood Watch

National Weather Service

Heavy rains are causing problems in parts of the Deep South.

Flood watches and warnings cover the northern parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia, and nearly all of Tennessee is at risk for floods. Several school systems are delaying classes or closing.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for much of North Georgia. Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe counties are included in that advisory.

Forecasters say strong wind gusts combined with extremely saturated soils in northern Georgia have resulted in conditions susceptible for trees to become uprooted and blown over. Trees may be blown onto structures, roadways or powerlines causing further power outages across the area.

The Flash Food watch will remain in effect through Thursday.
