Noted Political Scientist To Deliver Annual Parthemos Lecture

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology political scientist Charles Stewart III will deliver the annual George S. Parthemos lecture, hosted by The University of Georgia's Department of Political Science.

The Parthemos lecture honors the late UGA professor George S. Parthemos, who taught at the university from 1953 to his death in 1984. Each year, a guest speaker is invited to not only deliver the lecture, but teach in a two-day residency.

“We are lucky to have the opportunity to learn from one of the premier political scientists of his generation,” says Scott Ainsworth, Head of the Department of Political Science.

“Every student of Congress and elections knows and respects his work. Throughout the 2000s, the nation’s electoral systems faced repeated challenges, making Stewart’s topic particularly timely.”

Stewart's research and teaching areas include congressional politics, elections and American political development. His lecture, “American Elections Since 2000: Getting Better, But Not Feeling Better About It” will give an overview of his upcoming book, where he makes the argument that America has gotten better at running elections since 2000.

The lecture will be delivered April 26 at 3:30 p.m. in Baldwin Hall, room 480. It's part of UGA's Signature Lecture series and will be open to the public.
