Athens Area Humane Society's Kitten Shower

Athens Area Humane Society

The Athens Area Humane Society is hosting its 4th Annual Kitten Shower at the Taylor-Grady House on Prince Avenue this weekend. It gets underway from Sunday, April 28th from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.

The event features brunch by Mama’s Boy, a coffee station and desserts, along with Mimosas and Bloody Marys.

Social media and event coordinator Cronweld Leon says guests are encouraged to bring gifts such as canned kitten food, kitten formula, bottles, toys, litter and more.

“With the kitten shower, you know our main focus is kittens coming in with the new season,” Leon said. “Last year, we took in over 1,700 cats; over 1,000 of those were from animal controls of the surrounding county, the other 700-plus from owner surrenders.”

For those who are not attending, but would like to help, the humane society is also accepting monetary donations.

Executive Director Jane Stewart says the Athens Area Humane Society is a donor supported no-kill, non-profit organization dedicated to lowering area euthanasia rates through adoption, spay/neuter, and pet retention programs.

“It helps us get a good start on the summer because we see a lot more animals,” according to Stewart. “An unaltered mother cat typically would have three litters of five to seven a year. If you extrapolate that out within seven years, this one unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce over 420-thousand animals.”

The next big event for the AHS is Mardi Paws gala coming up May 11th at the Botanical Garden.
