Piedmont Athens Regional on Newsweek's 2019 List of Best Hospitals

Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center has achieved national recognition.

The facility has earned a spot on Newsweek magazine’s 2019 list of World’s Best Hospitals. The magazine worked with a research and consumer data m   company to compile its list of the 1,000 best hospitals in the world. Heather Alexander is the Director of Quality and Patient #Experience for the facility. She says the facility faced competition from are thousands of hospitals in the U.S. alone.

“In the U.S. there are 3,909 hospitals and in Georgia specifically, we have 113 hospitals,” Alexander said.

Piedmont Athens Regional was ranked number 154 in the United States and was one of only seven in Georgia to make the list.

Alexander says the rankings are comprised of three different elements. They are hospital recommendations from peers, patient experience surveys and key performance indicators. The ratio of patients and staff also factor in the determination.

The list ranked hospitals in 11 different countries, including the United States, Canada, Germany and France.

Countries selected were based on factors like population size, number of hospitals and data availability, and each hospital was then ranked based on the score they received from Newsweek’s three indicators. Hospitals also needed to have a capacity of at least 100 inpatient beds to be considered for the list.
