Local Gyms Team Up for Memorial Day Fundraiser

CrossFit Liberate and CrossFit Oconee are hosting an event benefiting the Navy SEAL Foundation. The organization provides immediate and ongoing support and assistance to the Navy SEAL Special Warfare community and its families. Jack Green is co-owner of CrossFit Liberate n Athens.

“Every CrossFit gym in the country, for the most part, does the workout MURPH on Memorial Day” according to Green. “The workout is run one mile, 300 squats, 200 push-ups, 100 pull-ups, run one mile and do that with a 20-pound vest if you’re able to.”

Area residents of all fitness levels are invited to take part in the workout in downtown Athens on Memorial day Monday, May 27th from 7:30 am until 11:30. The honorary workout in is memory of Michael P. Murphy, a Navy Lieutenant who was killed in Afghanistan in June 2005.

The workout, nicknamed “MURPH,” is a favorite of the fallen hero. Green says participants of all fitness levels are welcome, in addition to those who donate but don’t work out as well as spectators.

“Every workout, not just MURPH, but every workout in CrossFit can be modified to meet you in your fitness level where you are today.”

In addition to the workout, the event will also include food provided by Rashe's Cuisine, music and a spectator area.

There is a $50 registration fee to participate in the event, which includes a plate from Rashe’s, and additional food will be available for purchase for family and friends spectating.

All funds raised at the Memorial Day event will be matched by the recovery drink Kill Cliff, an official partner of the Navy Seal Foundation.

The foundation, established in 2000, is a national non-profit based in Virginia.
