Gainesville, Florida Mayor Loses Bet, Wears Georgia Gear

Facebook

The mayor of Gainesville, Florida is publicly supporting the Georgia Bulldogs. Lauren Poe lost a bet to Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz during the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. As a result, Poe had to don red and black bulldog gear and post a video of him cheering on the dawgs.

“So I’d like to congratulate the mayor and to pay my debt to Athens and Mayor Girtz,” Poe said in a Facebook video post. “I have agreed to dress in Georgia gear and say Go dawgs.”

Mayor Girtz had kind things to say about his colleague and how well Athenians did when it came to making pledges.

“Lauren Poe is a wonderful person and in fact a great policy maker pursuing many of the same things that are underway here: racial equity, youth development, better infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.”

Unfortunately for Mayor Poe, getting his city’s residents to make pledges proved more difficult than anticipated.

“But what he could not do is rally the troops in his community to pledge to reduce their water use and fortunately or unfortunately, Athenians have had quite a bit of experience in reducing their water use and they were willing to double down.”

The mayor says he’s happy to avoid wearing blue and orange.

“I am glad to avoid that and even worse I would have had to have done the gator chomp and I get to avoid that indignity on camera.”

Athens was one of five national winners in the challenge.
