The 2019 AthFest Music and Arts Festival gets underway next week. While official events start Friday, June 21st, the fest kicks off with an affiliated event, the Flagpole Music Awards, on Thursday. The Morton Theatre will host the Awards. Jill Helme is Executive Director of AthFest Educates. She says there’s something for everyone.

“I was just talking to our booking chair Troy Aubrey the other day; he gave me the best description of AthFest that I’ve ever heard. He described it to me and if you want a snap shot of what is happening in Athens music right now, that’s what AthFest does,” according to Helme.

This is the 23rd year of the event. Funds raised support local music and arts programs for children.

The nonprofit AthFest Educates supports local music and arts education. Helme says the organization has contributed substantial funds to area programs.

“We award grants for programs for kindergarten through eighth grade students. To date, we awarded over $370,000 in grants that go to local schools, other local nonprofits, government programs, that are working hard to bring really innovative and creative music and arts programs to our students.”

The festival is June 21st through 23rd in downtown Athens.

Most activities are free, but attendees who purchase wristbands for the Club Crawl help provide funds for AthFest Educate grants to programs for local children.
