Climb Out of Darkness 2019

Athens residents and members of the and surrounding community are invited to take part in the worldwide Climb Out of the Darkness,” event.

Sponsored by Postpartum Support International, it is the world’s largest event raising awareness of maternal mental illnesses like pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety.

Tiffany Eberhard is the Athens climb leader.

“They have three main goals: to train medical and health care providers about how to better serve families that need emotional and mental support during this time; they educate moms and families about what exactly is postpartum anxiety and depression and they advocate for improved healthcare for all families,” Eberhard said.

Athens is one of 13 cities in Georgia joining communities around the region, nation and world, taking part in walks and climbs for the occasion.

Eberhard says the event draws attention to the problems the entire household can often face after a new addition to the family.

“There’s a whole gamut of other mental health issues that some women and families don’t know about.”

The walk is Saturday, June 22nd.

Goal this year to raise $40,000 in Georgia.

“And those funds go back to the Georgia Chapter for Postpartum Support International.”
