Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves One Dead, Two Officers on Admin Leave

Two Athens-Clarke County police officers have been placed on administrative leave following an officer-involved shooting that left one subject dead. The incident occured at approximately 12:30PM at an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Macon Highway.

The individual actually ran at the officer, and the officers fired multiple shots at that individual. (ACCPD Chief Cleveland Spruill)

Speaking at a media conference this afternoon, ACCPD Chief Cleveland Spruill said that officers responded to reports of a knife-wielding man acting "erratically."

According to Spruill, "Upon arrival, officers encountered the man, who was still in possession of the knife.  Officers gave numerous commands for the man to drop the knife; however, he disregarded these commands and began to advance on the officers ... The individual actually ran at the officer, and the officers fired multiple shots at that individual.  The individual fell to the ground as a result of his injuries, and he was immediately thereafter treated by paramedics but he succumbed to his injuries."

The deceased man's name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. One ACCPD officer sustained minor injuries, but was treated at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
