ACCPD Searching for Suspects in Shooting Death of Pregnant Woman

Athens police are searching for answers in the shooting death of a pregnant woman. Officers responded to the scene at the Clarke Garden Apartments at Carriage Court after reports of shots fired.

Geof Gilland, Public information officer with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, says 24-year old Auriel Callaway was found suffering from a gunshot wound Monday night 9:37 pm. She is thought to have been four or five months pregnant.

“Officers provided care to the victim and then EMS arrived and transported the victim, however when she arrived at the hospital she was pronounced dead,” according to Gilland. “And her unborn child was also deceased.”

Callaway was walking with her two-year son at the time of the shooting. That child was not hurt during the incident.

Gilland says police have spoken with several area residents in connection with this case.

“Around 7 o’ clock this morning, ACC obtained warrants and searched multiple apartments within the complex. They were detained due to being residents of the apartment or they were detained as being persons of interest, not necessarily as suspects in the incident.”

Everyone questioned has been released.

“We need the public’s help identify the suspects and bring them to justice,” Gilland said.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting is asked to contact Detective Scott Black (706-613-3330, extension 798) or Detective Paul Johnson (706-613-3330, extension 522.
