University Housing Prepares for Students' Return

Tens of thousands of University of Georgia students are coming back to campus beginning Saturday. Nearly 200 student and staff volunteers will be in and around residence halls to helping with parking, traffic and resident check in.

According to a release from housing, more than 60 percent of residents tend to move in on the first day.

More than 3,200 have confirmed time slots for Saturday. And while times will be staggered, traffic is expected to be very in the area.

On Aug. 9-10, traffic is expected to be very heavy on Baxter, Lumpkin, Finley, Hull and Church streets. Members of the Athens community are advised to avoid these areas and be aware that traffic in the university area will be congested throughout the week.

The Athens-Clarke County government will close street parking spaces on Finley Street (from Baxter Street to Cloverhurst Avenue) from 8 a.m. August 8 until 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 10.

Housing staff will set up barricades in these areas and UGA Police Department will monitor parking violations. Unloading zones near the halls will be strictly enforced and vehicles left unattended for longer than one hour will be towed.
