Dangerous Heat Grips Wide Stretch of the South and Midwest

Forecasters are warning of scorching heat across a wide stretch of the U.S. South and Midwest, where it will feel as high as 115 degrees (46 degrees Celsius) in some spots.

Parts of 13 states on Monday will be under heat advisories, from Texas, Louisiana and Florida in the South to Missouri and Illinois in the Midwest, the National Weather Service reported.

Athens-Clarke County is among dozens of others around Georgia under a heat advisory Monday afternoon thought 8 o’ clock Monday night.

A Heat Advisory means that a period of dangerous heat is expected.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory affects much of north and central Georgia. Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe counties are also included.

Heat index values will be above 105 degrees in many areas.

Forecasters warn High heat and humidity will cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure. Forecasters recommend that when possible, schedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon and evening. Some storms may be strong with gusty winds, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and heavy rain.

Similar conditions are expected Tuesday.
