Moms Demand Action, Keep the G Gun Free Host Recess Rally at Arch

Two Athens organizations are joining countless others around the nation in rallying for action addressing gun violence. The Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Keep the ’G’ Gun Free are hosting the gathering at the Arch Saturday.

According to Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, 100 Americans are killed with guns every day. Shannon Lawhon is the Georgia Chapter leader for moms.

“What we would like to see is for Congress to pass federal background checks on all gun sales and for them to also pass a strong Red Flag law,” according to Lawhon. “We’re not just here advocating for the prevention of mass shootings, we’re here because of everyday gun violence.”

The registered gun owner says the group isn’t anti-gun, just pro-gun safety and common sense.

“I’m actually a gun owner and I advocate for commonsense gun laws. I support the second amendment, but I also advocate for laws that protect the citizens of our state.”

Ivan Ingerman is the founder of Keep the G Gun Free. The organization was created in opposition to campus carry.

“Joining forces with Moms Demand Action is pivotal and key in making sure folks know that we’re still here and we’re still fighting for them. “Even though HB 280 did pass in 2017 and campus carry is now law in Georgia, we’re trying to get that repealed.”

The Rally is Saturday at the UGA Arch at 3 pm. The community is invited to attend.
