Athenians Urged to Weigh in on Water Rate Survey

ACC Government

Athens residents have chance to have a say in how their water bills are determined. The Athens Clarke County Public Utilities Department is conducting an online survey aimed at receiving customer feedback. Laurie Lofton is the Water Conservation Coordinator for the department.

“Periodically we want to go and review our rate structure and make sure it’s meeting the needs of the utility as well as the community,” Lofton said. “We will take this feedback into consideration as we evaluate the rate structure to determine if we have it remain as is, if we need to adjust it.”

Customers have a chance to tell what they think about the current rate structure as well as common rate structures used in other cities.

Lofton explains how the process currently works.

“Our current tiered water rate structure, which looks at individual households’ winter average, so how much they use in the winter months as their base rate. The winter average is factored in to determine what a household needs, the basic water needs. In the summertime people tend to do more watering and outdoor activity so as people move up the tiers in using more water the cost for water increases.”

Visit www.accgov.com/publicutilities, to participate in the survey. Customers have until September 14th to respond.
