There is only one week left for the public to submit comments regarding an application for a Department of the Army permit to mine over 2,400 acres of land near the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District received the pre-application from Twin Pines Minerals for the project in August 2018, and after review, a joint public notice was released in July 2019. The heavy mineral sand mining facility would be mined in stages, with the first stage on the 2,414 acre land site east of Okefenokee and North of Georgia Highway 94.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State Historic Preservation Office will be consulted to ensure the project will not pose a threat to endangered species or the historic land.
The Corps emphasized in the public notice that public comments on the project will be taken into consideration.
