GBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting at University Gardens

Around 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a domestic violence incident at University Gardens Apartments at 190 Baxter Drive.

According to a preliminary statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers found a man from North Carolina at the scene armed with a machete. After brandishing the machete in a "threatening manner" and ignoring officers' commands to drop the weapon, an officer fired his gun at the subject, hitting him in the torso.

ACCPD provided first aid until EMS arrived, and the subject was taken to a local hospital. He is in serious condition.

In compliance with ACCPD's policy, the officer has been placed on leave until GBI concludes its investigation.
