GBI/ACCPD Release Names in Officer-Involved Shooting in Athens

The names of those involved in Monday’s police shooting have been released.

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the officer is Senior Police Officer Lamar Glen. The 53-year old has been with the department for 29 years.

A GBI media release identifies the woman shot as 54-year old Bonny Thomas of Athens.

According to preliminary information from the GBI, Monday morning at approximately 10:12 Glenn responded to a 911 call from a woman in the 100 block of Chalfont Drive.

The caller said a woman had a knife and gun, but did not specify a problem. When Glenn arrived he saw Thomas, who was carrying a large knife. The report says Thomas moved toward the officer with the knife raised and she told him she also had a gun.

A release from the ACCPD states Glenn moved away from Thomas and asked her serval times to drop the weapon, but did she did not.

Thomas then reportedly ran toward Officer Glenn with the knife raised in a threatening manner and he, fearing for his life, fired one shot at Thomas, striking her in the torso.

Officers performed first aid until EMS arrived and transported Thomas to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries.

An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur. Glenn was placed on administrative leave with pay.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Once the GBI investigation is completed, it will be turned over to the Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
