Living with Alzheimer's Educational Series at UGA

The University of Georgia is partnering the Alzheimer’s Association as part of an outreach effort to the community. Lisa Renzi-Hammond is a professor at UGA’s Institute of Gerontology. She says the organization specializes in education and research, and is now offering that expertise to community members who have recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

“Our goal in this new edition, new iteration of our institute is to really reach out into the community and be a resource for people who are aging and have some sort of concern about neurodegenerative disease or sensory aging,” according to Renz-Hammond. “Things like that.”

The free, three-part series, 'Living with Alzheimer's' takes place Friday November 8th, 15th and 22nd. Renzi-Hammond says the program offers valuable information as well as practical advice from those affected by the disease.

“In each session we’ll be giving information about what the diagnosis means, strategies that you can use to live your best.”

In addition to professionals, speakers will also include those afflicted with Alzheimer’s who have developed successful coping skills and habits.

“People who participate will be hearing from us at the institute and they’ll also hear from some of the members of our local community who are themselves living with Alzheimer’s Disease and who have figured out all sorts of strategies and methods really for making the most of it.”

The sessions last from 1 to 4 pm and are being held at the CARE Center in Hudson Hall located at 102 Spear Road. To register, call the 24-hour helpline at 1-800-272-3900.
