Unplugged for The Cottage 2019

An Athens nonprofit is hosting an annual fundraiser to benefit survivors of sexual violence and child abuse.

The Cottage Sexual Assault Center & Children’s Advocacy Center will host its annual Unplugged for the Cottage event Thursday. Executive Director Sally Kimel-Sheppard tells us what those attending can expect.

“It’s $25 to gain entry. You get to hear some fantastic bands like Tiny Jazz Arkestra, diet dangfly!, Betsy Franck, Caroline Aiken, folks like that,” accordng to Kimel-Sheppard. “We also have local restaurants that have donated food to us so you be provide food as well.”

The mission of The Cottage is to raise awareness and assist the healing of individuals, families and communities affected by sexual violence and child abuse. All services are free.

“The funds raised will go toward paying for therapy for survivors of child abuse and sexual assault in Athens and the surrounding area.”

Kimel-Sheppard says the facility provides immediate and longer-term assistance for survivors.

“The Cottage is kind of two-fold in our mission. We work with survivors immediately after the incident of abuse, or if they choose to tell law enforcement or the authorities. But also the second fold of that mission is to make sure there are no barriers for folks to receive healing services such as therapy and support groups and things like that.”

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online or at the door. It’s 6 to 9 pm Thursday at Little Kings Shuffle Club.

The Cottage Hotline is 706-353-1912.
