ACCPD Urges Caution in Social Media Transactions

After arranging transactions through Facebook, two separate victims were robbed at gunpoint Nov. 13 in Athens-Clarke County, police said.

The first victim attempted to buy a cell phone at the 100 block of Pepperidge Lane around noon. The suspect took the victim’s wallet and fled the scene.

The second victim also attempted to buy a cell phone and met up with the seller at the 500 block of Kathwood Drive around 2 p.m. There are multiple suspects in this incident, taking multiple personal items. They fled the scene after.

Neither victim was harmed, but ACCPD “urges caution for purchases arranged through any online app.”

ACCPD suggests citizens take the following precautions:

  • transactions should occur during the day and never at night
  • a well-lit and frequented location is the best place for a transaction
  • consider a law enforcement parking lot to conduct your transaction
  • do not meet at a private residence
  • beware if the buyer or seller changes the location once it is established
  • consider alternate forms of payment rather than cash
